Man attacked by a shark in California, prompts closures of some beaches

PACIFIC GROVE, Calif. — A man was attacked by a shark in California on Wednesday, prompting police to close multiple beaches in the area.

According to the Pacific Grove Police Department in a news release, at around 10:35 a.m., a man was attacked by a shark at Lover Point Beach near Monterrey, California.

Police said the man who was swimming in the ocean at the time of the attack had significant injuries from a shark bite and was taken to the hospital. According to KSBW, the man was injured in the stomach and leg.

“We want to express our gratitude and appreciation to the good Samaritans that took immediate action and personal risk to assist the swimmer. We thank our partners at the U.S. Coast Guard and the Department of Fish and Wildlife. In addition, we thank our CERT team members who responded to help with the beach closures to keep the community safe,” said police in a news release.

KRON said officials have not yet identified the shark species, but great white sharks live in the Monterey Bay.

As a precaution, officers have closed Pacific Grove beaches until Saturday, June 25, according to a news release.
