More than 120 students at Florida elementary school surprised with free bikes

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Dozens of students got a nice surprise recently when they stopped by their Florida school.

According to Orlando's WFTV, more than 120 bikes were given to children from Pine Hills Elementary in Orange County. The Bikes for Kids Foundation made the delivery on the last day of school, when the children and their families thought they were just picking up their stuff.

Before the coronavirus pandemic, third-graders participated in a bicycle safety course and wrote essays. Three of the best essays were selected, and the children were each given a new bike. But after giving away the first three, the rest of the bikes were wheeled out to children standing a safe distance apart in the parking lot.

New York Life Insurance helped sponsor the event. Representative Kyle Williamson says the goal is to eventually deliver bikes to other schools in Orange and Seminole counties.
