In a statement Saturday night, the president’s campaign said it had filed a petition for the recount. Trump is within his legal rights to request the recount, since President-elect Joe Biden’s margin of victory in Georgia was less than 0.5%.

Trump had two business days to request another recount.

“Today, the Trump campaign filed a petition for recount in Georgia,” the campaign said in its statement. “We are focused on ensuring that every aspect of Georgia state law and the U.S. Constitution are followed so that every legal vote is counted.”

The move by the Trump campaign comes a day after Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and Gov. Brian Kemp certified Biden’s victory. On Friday, Kemp, a Republican, signed the paperwork that officially granted the state’s 16 electoral votes to Biden.

“I’m as frustrated as (President Donald Trump) is with how this process has played out with ballots showing up that were missed in the first count, but I have a duty under the constitution as governor, just like the secretary of state does, and that’s what I’ve been following,” Kemp told WSB-TV.

Biden defeated Donald Trump by 12,670 votes, according to the audit required by state law.

Raffensperger, a Republican, said he was disappointed that his party lost but added that “numbers don’t lie.”
