The 25-year-old woman was not identified by name but, according to the National Park Service, is from Grove City, Ohio.

Officials said she approached the bison near the boardwalk at Black Sand Basin, north of Old Faithful. When she got close, the animal gored her and tossed her 10 feet in the air.

The woman had a puncture wound among other injuries. She was taken to an Idaho hospital for treatment, the park service said. There is no word on her condition.

There were at least two other people within the regulated 25 yards of the bison.

Not only are visitors to Yellowstone required to stay 25 yards away from bison in the park, they are also supposed to stay that distance away from all large animals, including elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose and coyotes. People need to stay at least 100 yards away from bears and wolves.

This was the first case of 2022 of a person getting too close to a bison, what the park officials called “threatening,” and the animal responding by goring the person, park service officials said.

There are between 2,300 and 5,550 bison in Yellowstone, NBC News reported.
