Electoral College live updates: Joe Biden passes 270 votes to be elected next president

5:30 p.m. ET Dec. 14, 2020: Joe Biden passed the needed 270 Electoral College votes at 5:30 p.m. ET to be elected president of the United States.

On Monday, Electoral College electors from across the country will meet to cast their ballots for the next president of the United States.

By law, in a presidential election year, the electors named to the Electoral College meet on the first Monday after the second Wednesday in December to cast their ballots.

The results from the Nov. 3 general election had Joe Biden getting 306 electoral votes while President Donald Trump got 232.

The votes cast Monday will be formally counted during a joint session of Congress on Jan. 6.
