ROGERSVILLE, Tenn. — A Tennessee man is facing child endangerment and drug charges after a deputy said he discovered a hatchet, meth and drug paraphernalia near a toddler who was in the suspect’s care.

According to WCYB-TV and the Rogersville Review, a Hawkins County sheriff’s deputy arrested Jeremy Jenkins, 23, of Rogersville, on Monday afternoon after conducting a welfare check at a Cartersville Valley Road home.

The deputy, Dustin Winter, initially responded to the scene of a vehicle crash and found a woman, who said Jenkins, her boyfriend, accidentally drove off the road as he tried to hand her toddler a pacifier, the Review reported. Instead of reporting the crash, Jenkins went home with the 2-year-old, the woman reportedly told Winter.

When Winter arrived at the house, he said he found Jenkins, whose eyes were closed, drooling and quivering while lying by a sofa, the news outlets reported. The toddler was standing nearby, Winter said.

“Beside the couch in plain view was a glass methamphetamine pipe, tubing, baggies with drug residue and a baggy containing approx. 0.82 grams of methamphetamine,” Winter wrote in the arrest report, according to the Review. He added that the items “were all within easy access to the child.”

Winter said Jenkins fought against him and resisted arrest, according to the arrest report. After warning Jenkins, Winter deployed a stun gun, which Jenkins tried to take, the Review reported. Jenkins stopped resisting after Winter used “defensive tactics,” the deputy wrote.

Jenkins was arrested on several charges, including child endangerment, possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, assaulting an officer, resisting arrest and leaving the scene of an accident, WCYB reported.
