Belton police officers were called to do a welfare check for Jennifer James on the afternoon of Dec. 1, police told KCEN. When police arrived at the house, they met with James’ niece, Kayla, who said that she had received a phone call about Jennifer not showing up to work.

Police said that James’ son, 19-year-old Jasper James, was home when police arrived and they made contact with him at the property, KWKT reported.

When Jasper opened the door, he told officers that he had not seen his mother since the previous morning, KCEN reported. Kayla told officers that when she called the previous evening, Jasper said that Jennifer was asleep.

In court documents obtained by KCEN, police said they began searching the property for Jennifer, and found her body inside a crawl space under the house after removing an access panel.

Police told KWTX that Jennifer’s body showed signs of trauma, including stab wounds.

Jasper was charged with murder. He is being held at the Bell County Jail on a $1,500,000 bond, according to online jail records.
