Samantha, a first-time mother, delivered the baby at 10:29 a.m. MDT on Wednesday, KRQE-TV reported. In a Facebook post, zoo officials said staff members watched the birth through a remote video feed.

The 15-year-old mother and her baby are “doing well,” zoo officials said. The baby has started nursing.

The sex of the new gorilla has not been determined, zoo officials said. The father of the gorilla is 20-year-old Kojo, who has been at the ABQ Bio Park Zoo since 2021.

“We look forward to sharing more photos and footage in the coming days and weeks,” zoo officials wrote on Facebook.
