Suspect in custody after 3 killed, 3 injured in Wisconsin tavern shooting

KENOSHA, Wis. — Authorities in Kenosha, Wisconsin, have arrested a suspect in an early-morning shooting at a popular tavern that left three men dead and at least three others injured.

Update 8:38 p.m. ET April 18: The suspect, who has not been identified, was apprehended more than 15 hours after the shooting, following a manhunt that involved about 100 officers, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

The suspect is expected to be charged with one count of first-degree intentional homicide, and additional charges are possible, the newspaper reported.

All three injured men remained hospitalized Sunday evening, and there is at least one possible additional shooting victim, authorities confirmed to the Journal Sentinel.

Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth said during a Sunday morning news conference that the suspected shooter was a patron at the tavern who “wasn’t cooperating with the management.” He left the premises but returned a short while later, at around 12:45 a.m., and began shooting.

Because shots were fired both inside and outside the bar, investigators believe more than one person could have fired shots, but no threat to the public remains, Beth said, confirming he believes handguns were used.

Authorities had not publicly identified the shooting victims as of Sunday evening.

In response to the shooting, Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers said in a statement that his “heart breaks” for Kenosha.

“We are thinking of the families and loved ones affected and the entire Kenosha community as they grieve and grapple with yet another tragic incident of gun violence,” Evers stated.

Original report: The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting started around 12:42 a.m. at the Somers House when an argument escalated after a man was asked to leave the bar, WISN reported.

No arrests have been made. The suspect, described as a Black man over 6 feet tall, wearing a light-colored hooded sweatshirt, is still on the loose, TMJ reported.

The two injured victims were taken to area hospitals. Investigators believe there might be other victims who suffered less serious injuries as well. They have contacted hospitals to find them.
