Whenever we add music for voting on 97x - whether it's cool new stuff or inspired by the "Suggest A Song" space on the app/website - we will let you know through our New Music Blog!
Some of today's songs were suggested through the app, but they're also all cool new music. So I thought I'd post a video with each so you can check them out. Let us know what you think!
UK folk-punk troubadour Frank Turner rebels against convention with his fifth album to date, Tape Deck Heart. He told MTV:
"I have this theory that a lot of bands and writers, when they get to a certain level of success and/or a certain number of albums — and this is my fifth album — they sort of retreat a bit and get a bit generic and bland," Turner smiled. "And that strikes me as a bad idea, so I decided to try and do the opposite of that, and write the most visceral, raw, personal record that I could ... And the measure of success of that is that I'm kind of terrified about what certain people are going to think about this record."
Here's "Recovery".
Cold War Kids have turned their left-of-center piano-pop into a decade-long, somewhat under-the-radar career. Their new album Dear Miss Lonelyhearts drops April 2 and features this song. Here's "Miracle Mile".
Soundgarden put out their post-reunion album King Animal last fall. "By Crooked Steps" is interesting to me because much of the song is in 5/4 time - uncommon for a radio single. Also, Foo Fighters' frontman Dave Grohl directed the video.
Atlas Genius finally released their full-length debut When It Was Now last month - about a year after giving us its first single "Trojans." Now the dancy Australian four-piece gives us "If So".
Garage duo Middle Class Rut will release a new album in May called Pick Up Your Head. If "Aunt Betty" is any indication, the 97X Backyard BBQ veterans will sound even heavier and more dynamic this time around.
RDGLDGRN's gimmick is that the three dudes out of D.C. name and dress themselves after their respective favorite colors. Luckily for them, they were recording their debut album at the now-closed Sound City Studios in L.A. at the same time Dave Grohl was filming his Sound City documentary. They asked him to play drums on "I Love Lamp".
I know Papa Roach is named after singer Jacoby Shaddix's grandfather, but it's hard not to make comparisons to the titular insect as the band seems to survive every successive trend in popular music that has rendered similar bands irrelevant. They're now three singles deep into The Connection with "Before I Die".
