Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor said he would spend most of 2012 writing material for Nine Inch Nails, but this week's Lollapalooza and tour announcement marks the first firm plans for the group's return. Billboard reports:



Four years after declaring that Nine Inch Nails should "disappear for a while," group mastermind Trent Reznor is reviving his most successful industrial rock project for an extended tour that will kick off this summer. Although no dates have been revealed, sources tell Billboard that one of the reunited group's appearances will be at Lollapalooza in Chicago.

A new statement from Reznor details the new collective that will form NIN as well as the upcoming tour, which will spill into next year. Here is the full statement (via Pitchfork):

Nine Inch Nails are touring this year.

I was working with Adrian Belew on some musical ideas, which led to some discussion on performing, which led to some beard-scratching, which (many steps later) led to the decision to re-think the idea of what Nine Inch Nails could be, and the idea of playing a show. Calls were made to some friends, lots of new ideas were discussed, and a show was booked - which led to another, which somehow led to a lot of shows.

The band is reinventing itself from scratch and will be comprised of Eric Avery, Adrian Belew, Alessandro Cortini, Josh Eustis, Ilan Rubin, and me. The first shows will begin this summer, followed by a full-on arena tour of the US this fall, and lots of other dates worldwide to follow through 2014.

Multi-instrumentalist Cortini and drummer Rubin have previously performed with NIN, while Jane's Addiction's Avery, King Crimson's Belew and Telefon Tel Aviv's Josh Eustis are the new "friends" that Reznor mentions in his statement. Reznor, of course, has been the only constant member of Nine Inch Nails since forming the project in 1988.

Nine Inch Nails' hiatus officially began after the group performed its final show together in Sept. 2009. Since then, Reznor has taken home a Golden Globe and Academy Award for his original score for 2010's "The Social Network," composed with his creative partner Atticus Ross. Reznor and Ross collaborated again on the score for David Fincher's 2011 adaptation of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo."

Although Reznor's new statement does not allude to a new NIN album, Reznor told Billboard last year that he was writing new songs for his long-running project, in spite of its dormancy. "My voice as a songwriter feels like it needs to speak up or at least work out a little bit to not atrophy," he said at the time. "I think I have something to say that feels unique to who I am right now, and that's when it tells me it's time to do something."

Before the Nine Inch Nails reunion takes place, Reznor will release "Welcome oblivion," the debut LP from his side project How To Destroy Angels, on Mar. 5 through Columbia Records. The group, which also includes Reznor's wife Mariqueen Maandig, Rob Sheridan and Ross, will make its live debut at the 2013 Coachella fest on Apr. 12, and has plotted tour dates through the end of April. Nine Inch Nails, meanwhile, last performed at Lollapalooza in 2008, alongside artists like Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine and Kanye West.
