Whenever we add music for voting on 97x - whether it's cool new stuff or inspired by the "Suggest A Song" space on the app/website - we will let you know through our New Music Blog!
Some of today's songs were suggested through the app, but they're also all cool new music. So I thought I'd post a video with each so you can check them out. Let us know what you think!
JOEL'S PICK Will Brooklyn art-pop quartet X Ambassadors achieve the rare musical feat of being interesting and accessable? "Unconsolable" is both minimalist and soaring as keys and guitars build over the song's two most distinct characteristics - Sam Harris' voice and drummer Adam Levin's cross-sticking. "Unconsolable" feels perfectly contemporary without trying too hard, but that may also be a function of producer Alex da Kid (Imagine Dragons). The rhythm and vocal leave me wondering if X Ambassadors are the 'blue-eyed soul' counterpart to influential NYC group TV On The Radio. Their debut EP Love Songs Drug Songs is out now.
Speaking of Imagine Dragons, they've selected a fourth single from their debut album Night Visions. They must be reading fans' brains, because they've once again picked their song with, coincidentally, the most suggestions through the 97x app. The whistling, summery "On Top Of The World" could almost double as the band's victory lap following their many successes of the past year-and-a-half.
Our Icelandic friends Of Monsters And Men are likewise four singles deep into a full-length debut. My Head Is An Animal opener "Dirty Paws" is at the center of promotion surrounding the new Ben Stiller film The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty. Click here to see the trailer if you haven't, but the lyric video is below.
Vampire Weekend dig a little deeper into their #1 album Modern Vampires Of The City with "Unbelievers". Here's their recent Saturday Night Live performance.
Finally, Folk/punk troubador Frank Turner could be on the verge of crossover success. He follows up the blistering "Recovery" from Tape Deck Heart with a glimpse at his gentler side in "The Way I Tend To Be".
