Dave Grohl back on drums for next Queens Of The Stone Age album

By Joel

Queens Of The Stone Age may be considered by many to be a one-hit wonder. They never quite matched the success of their biggest hit, "No One Knows," but the band's many devoted fans see the band more deeply.

QOTSA's 2002 album Songs For The Deaf featured an array of guest performers, most notably Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) on drums. The album was a dense slab of rock with a psychedelic concept - recreating frontman Josh Homme's long drives through the California desert with nothing but an FM radio to keep him company. Fake radio vignettes and sound effects bookend songs to create a seamlessness to the album. There was even a hidden track before the first song, "The Real Song For The Deaf," recorded by rubbing a balloon on a microphone.

Prior to this, QOTSA put out a very well-regarded 2000 album Rated R, and the band has roots in the legendary stoner-rock outfit Kyuss.

After Songs For The Deaf, QOTSA's output was mixed. Lullabies to Paralyze (2005) was pretty good, and Era Vulgaris (2007) had its moments. Grohl and Home collaborated again with Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones in the supergroup Them Crooked Vultures for a self-titled album in 2009.

With Dave Grohl back on board for the upcoming sixth Queens Of The Stone Age album, I have high hopes. Blabbermouth reports:

"With QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, like, there were no boundaries with that band, there were no limits with them," he explained. "It was like if you did something insane, you'd do more, if you did something that seemed too ridiculous — and honestly the new QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE record, I'm playing drums on that, and I'll do something so completely ridiculous, I'll just, like, 'There's no way that that Josh [Homme, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE mainman] is going to let me do that,' and he'll say, 'Do that for forty-five seconds, over and over again, that's become, like, part of the song, that is a big part of the song,' and that's the way they work."

Speaking about QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE's general vibe, Grohl added: "When you walk into a festival backstage with QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, it’s like, the record stops. People stop and they stare, and it’s like, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE are, without question, the baddest rock and roll band in the world! And they still are, and when 'Songs For The Deaf', when that came out, it blew people's minds, man, for real."

Grohl stepped in to lay down the drums tracks on the new QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE record, which is expected in early 2013, following the departure of [drummer] Joey Castillo.
