Soundgarden was approached to write a song for the forthcoming Avengers film. The band has included previously unreleased music on live and best-of compilations since their 2010 reunion, but "Live To Rise" represents their first original work since the Down On The Upside album in 1996.

In a statement the band said, "We've been hard at work on our new album, which will come out this fall. When the opportunity arose to write an original song for Marvel's 'The Avengers' film… we thought it could be a cool match."
