97X Grammy Awards Preview

The 2012 Grammy Awards go down Sunday night  and will air on CBS. Generally the Grammys are awards voted on by old, out-of-touch music industry veterans that reward artists that have been making music for 30 years and slight younger acts that are actually making an impact today. Last year, though, they gave Arcade Fire the Album Of The Year award (and greatly pissed off fans of Eminem, Lady Gaga, and Katy Perry, inspiring so many "Who the f--- are Arcade Fire?" tweets) - so maybe they're getting their crap together?

Foo Fighters will perform as pretty much the rock community's sole representative. They'll also do some sort of collaboration with Lil Wayne, Deadmau5, and David Guetta as a tribute to dance/electronica music. Foos leader Dave Grohl often speaks negatively about dance music and reliance on computers, but Deadmau5 is Grammy nominated for a remix of Foo Fighters' own tune "Rope," so maybe Grohl's softening his stance.

Coldplay was previously confirmed to perform with Rihanna - most likely their collaboration "Princess of China" off Coldplay's latest album Mylo Xyloto.

Foster The People just joined the Grammy performers lineup as part of a Beach Boys reunion. Maroon 5 will also appear during this portion of the show.

Grammy Award Nominations for this year include lots of 97x artists and other noteworthy alternative acts. Here's a quick rundown of the major cateories.

Album Of The Year: Foo Fighters Wasting Light vs. Adele, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, and Rihanna
(Here's a great article about how the Foo Fighters recorded an album in Dave Grohl's garage using only old-school, analog equipment and managed an Album of the Year Grammy nomination.)

Record Of The Year: Mumford & Sons “The Cave," Bon Iver "Holocene" vs. Adele, Bruno Mars, Katy Perry

Song Of The Year: Mumford & Sons “The Cave,” Bon Iver "Holocene" vs. Adele, Bruno Mars, Kanye/Rhianna/Kid Cudi/Fergie

Best New Artist: Bon Iver, Skrillex, Nicki Minaj, The Band Perry, J. Cole

Pop Performance (duo/group): Coldplay "Paradise," The Black Keys "Dearest," Foster The People "Pumped Up Kicks" vs Tony Bennett/Amy Winehouse, Maroon 5/Christina Aguilera (The Black Keys' nomination is for a Buddy Holly cover)

Rock Performance (duo/group): Coldplay "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall", Foo Fighters "Walk", Mumford & Sons "The Cave", Radiohead "Lotus Flower," Decemberists "Down By The Water"

Hard Rock/Metal Performance: Foo Fighters "White Limo," Sum 41 "Blood In My Eyes" vs Mastodon, Megadeth, Dream Theater
