Paul McCartney took the stage late Wednesday night at "12-12-12" The Concert for Sandy Relief to perform a new song called "Cut Me Some Slack" with surviving Nirvana members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Foo Fighters' guitarist Pat Smear (who toured with Nirvana during that band's last months).
Billboard reported earlier this week about the former Beatle's surprise collaboration with the surviving members of Nirvana:
[Paul McCartney], it appears, had little knowledge of Nirvana's history or influence. [Kurt Cobain] committed suicide in April 1994, with the band having released three studio albums and two live sets.
"I didn't really know who they were," he reportedly said. "They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said: 'Whoa? You guys haven't played together for all that time?'
"And somebody whispered to me: 'That's Nirvana. You're Kurt.' I couldn't believe it."
Calling "Cut Me Some Slack" a Nirvana reunion song - as many embarrassingly have - would be a misrepresentation. Eddie Vedder performed "Comfortably Numb" with Roger Waters last night and no one is calling them Pink Floyd. Let's remember McCartney, Grohl and friends as a cool collaboration between several enduring, influential artists for a worthy cause.
