Mumford & Sons: 'Doom folk' was a joke

By Joel

Mumford & Sons' description of their next album as 'doom folk' started as a joke that spiraled a bit out of control. Frontman Marcus Mumford says their bassist's description of the new material as a cross between Black Sabbath and Nick Drake...

"was a joke to an American journalist who didn't understand the concept of sarcasm. I called Ted [Dwane, double bassist] and was like, 'Ted, what have you done? We spent our whole first album trying to avoid being pigeonholed!'

Mumford describes the new material in more typical musician-speak of "evolution, not revolution," and also that it's taking a bit longer than they originally thought.

The Black Keys' drummer and resident trash-talker Patrick Carney - the guy responsible for the band's controversies involving Nickelback, streaming music services, and Black Eyed Peas - says, "That's usually why I end up saying retarded shit sometimes, is just to get a rise out of him."

As we learned from his bandmate Dan Auerbach's interview with The Morning X last week, Dan must be the quiet one.

fun. marked the fourth-straight week of "We Are Young" as the number 1 song in the entire country! Celebrate by watching some video of fun. in the 97x Green Room. So far "We Are Young" is the biggest-selling single of 2012.

Warped Tour added some more bands to its lineup - Lostprophets being most notable. Other bands confirmed for the Tampa date include All Time Low, Bayside, Every Time I Die, Four Year Strong, Funeral Party, New Found Glory, Senses Fail, Streetlight Manifesto, Taking Back Sunday, The Constellations, Twin Atlantic, and Yellowcard. Check out the show page for the full list of bands for Tampa's July 29 Warped Tour stop. Listen to 97X all this week to win tickets before they go on sale!

Pitchfork released its seasonal, hipster-friendly Guide to Upcoming Releases, covering lots of new releases and reissues. I'm most psyched for new albums by Jack White (4/24) and Silversun Pickups (5/8).
