Bastille has covered Green Day’s ‘Basket Case’

We pretty stoked on this Bastille cover of Green Day’s ‘Basket Case’. It was recorded as part of an Amazon show ‘The Tick’. ‘The Tick’ is a revival of a 1986 fictional super hero crated by Ben Edlund. The show arrives on Amazon for streaming next Friday 8/25.

Honestly though, kinda more excited about this cover than the show.

We’ve made a version of                    @greenday ’s “Basket Case” with STRINGS AND BRASS for                    @TheTickTV – excited to announce it’s out everywhere tomorrow.           — BASTILLE (@bastilledan)                    August 16, 2017

We’re kicking off your 3 track snack at noon with it today!

Foo Fighters Play the Ancient Greek Acropolis of Athens

The latest music series from PBS, titled “Landmarks Live in Concert”, brought the Foo Fighters to Greece earlier this summer. The band recorded a live concert for the series from one of the most historic places in the world, the Acropolis of Athens. The venue dates back to 161AD. Don’t worry about the math on that, it’s old.

“We’ve done some crazy things over the last 20 years, but I think this might be the craziest thing the Foo Fighters have ever done,” Grohl said in a press statement of the concert, which took place just this past July.

Red Hot Chili Peppers’ drummer, Chad Smith, is the show’s current host liked what he saw. “The Acropolis hasn’t been rocked that hard in a while — maybe 2500 hundred years, give or take. It was an amazing experience, made extra special that I could spend it with my longtime friends, the mighty Foos.”

The show is set to air on November 10th so mark your calendars.

Mike D of the Beastie Boys is Now a Wine Sommelier

*Photo Courtesy of Food & Wine Magazine

Michael Diamond, otherwise known as Mike D, has found a second calling in life as he will be curating the wine list at a new Los Angeles restaurant, Hearth & Hound. Bloomberg reports that the restaurant is expected to open September 22nd and feature acclaimed chef, April Bloomfield.

“It’s going to be a fun list,” Mike D says. “We [sommelier Tyler Parson and me] are putting together a wine program that will get customers tasting things they might not taste. If you like California Syrah, I might point you towards a wine from another part of the world that’s better value. We’re going to pour half-bottles, so you can try different things.”

Owner Ken Friedman used to be a band manager and A&R rep before becoming a restauranteur. The space that the Hearth & Hound is taking over was once home to a British bar, named Cat & Fiddle, that was a favorite haunt of legendary musicians.

“Every band would go to Cat & Fiddle,” Friedman said. “Guns & Roses, Metallica. the Smiths, who I used to manage, would go there to get a proper pint. Liam Gallagher, Damon Albarn – I’d run into them all there.”

LISTEN: Brendon Urie wrote a song for SpongeBob the musical

So S pongeBob Squarepants is coming to life as a musical. For real.

The New York Times reports that the musical began in Chicago last Summer and moves to the Palace Theater on Broadway this fall. Music from David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend and more will be featured,  but what’s REALLY exciting is that Brendon Urie of Panic! At The Disco wrote a song for it! Can you even imagine a cooler mashup?!! Opening night for the shows in New York will be December 4th. *drops everything to buy tickets*

This is a clip from the song Urie wrote, ‘Just a Simple Sponge’. SO GREAT.

You can hear him jam to a portion of the song below!

Spotify Removes ‘Hate Bands’ From Streaming Service

Apparently there are (or were) 37 artists known to be ‘hate bands’, or rather people who had nothing better to do than spread their oddly construed views of the world onto other people by means of music. The music world is typically more open, left wing if you want to call it that, and compassionate towards others than the rest of the world is. That doesn’t go for everyone, obviously, but it is still appalling how people who spread hate choose to do it.

Spotify shared there reasoning for removing such artists in a statement shared with Billboard. Record labels and aggregators are “at first hand responsible” for the content they deliver, “illegal content or material that favors hatred or incites violence against race, religion, sexuality or the like is not tolerated by us.”

“Spotify takes immediate action to remove any such material as soon as it has been brought to our attention. We are glad to have been alerted to this content – and have already removed many of the bands identified today, whilst urgently reviewing the remainder.”

“It’s a soundtrack to an America worth fighting for,” the spokeswoman said in a separate statement.

I couldn’t agree with that statement more. There is no place for hate in this world, but unfortunately these hate groups find room for it, until it is quashed by Spotify.

Spotify just stepped into a massive grey area however, as the laws regarding internet content and music streaming are very ambiguous. They noted that such hate bands were relatively unheard of, and would have continued to be, had Spotify not made this announcement publicly. I say, who cares. So what that these bands may have received a little free publicity, but the overarching point is to make a statement, a statement that hate of any kind is not allowed in this country, or the anywhere in the world.

Past Pups and Bands from the Next Big Thing Puppy Pen

In recent years the PUPPY PEN has been a staple backstage at Next Big Thing. Adoptable pups from Humane Society of Pinellas and Pet Resource Center get to hang with listeners and the bands. Talk about some ~pre-show pet therapy~. Should we bring it back this year? UMMMM YES OF COURSE SILLY QUESTION SAM.

Sam from X Ambassadors took a NICE HIT of that puppy smell before their set.

This spotted cutie was super stoked on meeting PVRIS.

Glass Animals caught some REAL ANIMAL PUPPY VIBES to get them in the zone.

*Not a band member just wanted you to see this sweet pups Christmas sweater*

A bumper sticker we all can agree on: ‘I Hate 275’

Designer and illustrator Corey Danks recently posted in the              Tampa Reddit forum   a sticker he made that I think we all may be buying. It’s so simple, yet says so much.

‘I hate 275’.

Although Danks himself is from Philadelphia, he must have known that here in Tampa we deal with our fare share of I-275 pains. Malfunction junction during rush hour? THE WORST.

You can buy it and more of his stickers, including an ‘I hate I-4’ one              on his Etsy page.  I know what my family is getting for stocking stuffers this year.

Sarasota vlogger is back with more Siesta Key rants

Have you been keeping up the show? MTV’s very fake reality show filmed here in Siesta Key? Probably not. That’s why we have Louie Carey! The Sarasota vlogger went viral after his first rant about the show and he hasn’t stopped since. Recapping all 3 episodes so far and noting every bit of it’s ridiculousness. Besides the idiotic comment they made about our ’73 degree’ weather, what really sticks out to me is how little of the show is ACTUALLY filmed in Siesta Key. Many scenes are clearly filmed in downtown Sarasota or Venice. So then, what else are they faking? As Carey points out, it seems like quite a lot.

WATCH: Portugal. the Man Perform “Feel It Still” on Conan

Portugal. the Man's performance on Conan last night was a bit different than when they last appeared on late night television, bringing along hip hop dancers to Jimmy Fallon's stage. This time around, they brought a four piece string section with them to Conan.

Thirty Seconds to Mars Set to Release New Music

It’s been 4 years since we’ve had new music from Thirty Seconds to Mars. 4 years!?!

Well, the wait is over. Almost. After teasing their return as a band on Twitter back in June, they have since confirmed that we will hear new music on August 22nd. Their new single, “Walk on Water” will also make it’s TV debut on August 27th  during the MTV Video Music Awards.

Jared Leto tells fans, “We can’t wait to get back on the road and we couldn’t be more proud to share with you the first first single off of our new album. And yes, we have been working on it for four years. The last time we put an album out, there were no self driving cars, no fidget spinners, President Trump was still that guy on The Apprentice and Jon Snow hadn’t even died yet.” The band is also working on an America themed film project A Day in the Life of America. It captures footage from across all 5o states during a 24 hour period, specifically chosen as the 4th of July.

3. NBT Bands: Where Are They Now?

Twenty One Pilots: Opened NBT 12 and closed NBT 15. They have gone on to be a global rock sensation with one of the most passionate fan bases of any artist in history. They’ve broken records (‘Heathens’ spent more time at #1 on the Billboard Hot Rock Songs Chart than any track ever) and picked up countless awards. So proud of those dudes!!

Lostprophets: Played NBT 4 in Coachman Park. Not such a great ending for them, lead singer Ian Watkins is currently serving 35 years in jail for multiple child sex offenses.

Fun.: Performed on the side stage at NBT11 and have since had multiple #1 hits and performed at the Grammy’s. They also took home ‘Song of the Year’ at the Grammy’s for ‘We are Young’.

Flickerstick: Head of em? Probably not. Performed at the first Next Big Thing. Released a few albums and were featured on VH1’s ‘Bands on the Run’ Not much going on today, lead singer still performs occasionally and seems to be putting together a reunion tour? He also teaches tap dancing.

30 Seconds to Mars: Performed at Next Big Thing 3 times!! Have since gone on to sell out shows all over the world. Lead singer Jared Leto has also since become a superstar on the big screen, being featured in films such as ‘Requiem for a Dream’, ‘Dallas Buyers Club’, and ‘Suicide Squad’.

Framing Hanley: Played at Next Big Thing in 2009. ‘Hear Me Now’ was the groups biggest hit.

NBT9 Interview:

That music video was located on this site, sooo I guess they now give piano lessons? » Framing Hanley: Piano Lessons Online 2017

Imagine Dragons: Before they were the huge rockers they are today. Imagine Dragons were SUPPOSED to play at Next Big Thing 12 but had to cancel last minute because Dan Reynolds got a throat infection.

Earshot: Another one we never really heard from again. Well, at least they haven’t been in EARSHOT of us. Get it???? Okay I’ll stop. They played at Next Big Thing 2 and released 3 albums between 02′ and 08′. Also known for making man-jewelry and wet hair look extra douchey.

Stone Temple Pilots Performed With Chester Bennington: Pretty cool moment at Next Big Thing 2013. #RIPChesterBennington

A few more notable bands who played NBT: Fall Out Boy, Grouplove, AWOLNATION, and A Day To Remember. A few more you never really heard from again?  Abandoned Pools, Smile Empty Soul, and Staind.

Be sure to listen THIS FRIDAY AT 5PM as we reveal the biggest NBT lineup EVER!

Chad Smith Jams With Random Street Performers in London

It’s not confirmed whether this is Will Ferrell or Chad Smith, but either way, this is a move both of them would do. Basin my assumption on the quality of drumming, it’s safe to say that that was Chad Smith joining random street performers in London. Check out the video below. How epic would that be to stumble into a random act of music such as this?

Foster the People Release New Trippy Video for “Doing It For The Money”

Foster the People are one of the first band’s to take advantage of Google’s DeepDream technology, a  computer vision which uses a convolutional neural network to find and enhance patterns in images, thus creating a dream like hallucinogenic appearance.

Yeah, I know. What did that just say?

Basically, Google DeepDream is a smart technology that creates patterns within images that your brain will like, thus making the video more engaging than any one human could do.

Director Daniel Henry had this to say about the video, “In researching more about the DeepDream world,  I loved the idea of letting the collective unconscious of the internet play a part in the forming the music video. At any moment you can freeze frame and start to see a cryptic narrative that unfolds in infinite degrees. You might see a dog, or a dinosaur, or a dead president in these hallucinations, or it could just be projections of our inner turmoil.”

Arcade Fire Apologizes for Strange Social Media Campaign

If you’ve been a fan of Arcade Fire for a long time, you may know that they have been largely quiet on social media. The once independently signed band often laid low on the radar, fitting their m.o. However, that all changed ahead of their release of Everything Now, their first album under Columbia Records. Some of their social media posts have been quite strange, and frankly insensitive, leaving fans scratching their heads. Well, the band has had enough. They just released an apology, albeit very strange and ambiguous, but nonetheless an apology.

Arcade Fire statement re: Tannis Wright / social media. @pitchfork”>@pitchfork; @stereogum”>@stereogum; @consequence”>@consequence; @NME”>@NME; @RollingStone”>@RollingStone; &mdash" rel="nofollow">”>— Arcade Fire (@arcadefire) August" rel="nofollow">″>August 10, 2017

They put the blame on a guy by the name of Tannis Wright. If you are in need of social media consultation and strategy, I would suggest staying away from Tannis, if he actually exists. This apology comes shortly after they were forced to apologize for suggesting a dress code during their album release party, yet again Tannis’ fault. Shame on you Tannis. Also, shame on Arcade Fire, one of the biggest bands in the world, for not knowing what is going on with their social media. Oh well, they’re still awesome!

Taco Bell’s Newest Burrito is Either Disgusting or Genius

If you happen to be in and around Orange County, CA over the next couple of weeks, be sure to stop by a Taco Bell and pick up the new Firecracker Burrito. Filled with what Cosmopolitan describes as “Tabasco infused pop rocks”, the burrito is otherwise pretty typical. The worst part of this burrito is probably they way it looks. Maybe that’s how all menu items look from Taco Bell when you break them in half and post it to Instagram, but this one looks especially stomach churning.

And at only $1.49 per burrito, there’s no excuse not to try it.
