‘Welcome To Florida’ sign blanketed by snow

(Photo: Escambia County Sheriff’s Office)

Now you don’t see that every day!! Thanks to Winter Storm Benji hitting the deep South this week, the ‘Welcome To Florida Sign’ in the Northwest Part of our state had a light dusting of snow on it! The storm also left thousands without power and caused many school closures across a few states, but for us here in Florida we just had to break out the sweaters and sit in awe of a sight like this.

Hope you’re enjoying the sweater weather!

Joshua Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age Apologizes For Kicking Photographer in the Face

(Getty Images)

The strangest thing happened during a Queens Of The Stone Age show in Los Angeles on Saturday night. As you can see in the video below, lead singer Joshua Homme is casually jamming out on stage when he randomly kicks a photographers camera and it hits her in the face?! The photographer, Chelsea Lauren, had to be treated in the ER for her injuries but will be okay. The next day Homme issued two separate apologies via Twitter making it clear he was ‘a total dick’. Initially he had said he thought that he was kicking equipment and NOT  a person but seems to be steering away from that response now.

Just bizarre. See the apologies posted below. — QOTSA (@qotsa) December 11, 2017 — QOTSA (@qotsa) December 10, 2017

Sam’s Top NBT17 Moments

Sam talks NBT with Barns Courtney

Barns Courtney is going to be one of the must-see sets on Sunday at NBT. He’s an upcoming artist with a truly incredible story. Courtney just released his debut album in September, ‘The Attractions of Youth’, and explained to me that it really tells the story of him coming up from his lowest of lows (being dropped by a label) to his highest and best moments now. How low is low? We’re talking living like a hobo couch surfing in places like abandoned retirement homes! Yeah, he’s got some pretty insane stories.

Despite all that though, he maintains a solid sense of humor and his sincere appreciation for where he is now is awe-inspiring. He’s also an AWESOME stage performing and warns people in the front of the ‘man juices and hormones that will be flying around’.

Take a listen to our interview and don’t miss him at NBT!

Portugal. The Man break record for most weeks at No. 1 on Alternative charts with ‘Feel It Still’

Big congrats are in order for one of our #97XNBT bands Portugal. The Man! Their hit song ‘Feel it Still’ just broke the record for the most weeks at #1 on the Billboard Alternative  Songs Chart with 20 weeks.

To put that in perspective, they passed songs like Muse ‘Madness’, ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’ from Green Day, and ‘The Pretender’ from Foo Fighters. According to Billboard, here’s the list of some of the previous title holders:

19 weeks, “Madness,” Muse, 2012-13

18 weeks, “The Pretender,” Foo Fighters, 2007

17 weeks, “Uprising,” Muse, 2009-10

16 weeks, “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” Green Day, 2004-05

16 weeks, “It’s Been Awhile,” Staind, 2001

16 weeks, “Scar Tissue,” Red Hot Chili Peppers, 1999

Portugal. The Man perform Sunday December 3rd at Next Big Thing. Don’t have tickets?  Listen weekdays at 8am and 5pm,  buy them, OR head to one  of our many ticket drops!

Sam talks NBT with MAGIC GIANT

Magic Giant performed at BBQ with us in May and absolutely killed it! They have an insane energy on stage that completely took over the crowd in Vinoy Park. That said, when planning the #97XNBT lineup we couldn’t NOT bring these dudes back!!

I got to chat with Zang this week about everything from pre-show rituals (FREAK OUT!!) to on-stage falls and first-time crowd surfing experiences. I have to say though, my favorite part is the awkward moment where Zang surprises me by adding Austin to the call out of no where. These guys are one of a kind.

Magic Giant perform Saturday December 2nd at Next Big Thing. Don’t have tickets? Listen weekdays at 8am and 5pm, buy them, OR head to one of our many ticket drops!

Sam talks NBT with Zach from Portugal. The Man

Probably one of my FAVORITE interviews ever! Portugal. The Man will be performing at #97XNBT this Sunday December 3rd so bassist Zach Carothers called in to chat about it! Of course we didn’t just talk NBT. We had to discuss the wild success of ‘Feel It Still’ and how it is skyrocketed them to a completely new level in their career. He described crossing over into the pop world, “It’s been super funny, it’s a lot brighter and things are a lot cleaner. People are more tan with whiter teeth, have 6-packs and stuff. I’m 36-years-old and from Wasilla, Alaska. It’s not really my place but I’m having a blast hanging out there.” That’s honestly exactly how I picture the ‘pop’ world.

Another one of my favorite moments was when he described the unique experience of driving on the highway in Florida, “I’ll see an orange Lamborghini and be like ‘Rad!’ and then the next [car] is some like swamp mobile and I don’t even know what it is but it’s got tractor tires on it, the next one’s like a 90’s F150 towing a yacht, and then the next one is some like 60’s Chevy straight from Cuba or something!”  We are certainly a unique bunch down here.

Here the whole interview now!

Zach describes his first trip to Florida. YOU CAN SWIM IN THE OCEAN AND NOT DIE?!

Paramore release new video for ‘Fake Happy’

Hayley Williams prances through the streets of New York surrounded by ‘Fake Happy’ faces in the new video. The bands own Zac Farro directed the video which was just released last week. The upside-down smiley faces which surround her have become somewhat synonymous with the song and their latest album After Laughter.

But can we talk about that jumpsuit?!

Paramore will headline Sunday of Next Big Thing on December 3rd at the Ampitheatre! Don’t have tickets? Listen all week at 8am and 5pm OR buy them here!

Fort De Soto Beach is covered in millions of snails

(Getty Image)

The reason they are here is still unclear but millions of Cerith snails have washed up on Fort De Soto beach. At first you may think the sand is covered by a sea of black pebbles but nope, those are snails.

The snails are not foreign to the Bay area but usually do not arrived in these numbers and would be found on the bottom of the Gulf in the sand. Theories range from low tide, to an algae bloom, to a possible side effect of all of our recent hurricanes.

Might be kind of cool to go down and check it out! Read more on the story here.

Watch AWOLNATION’s inspiring new video for ‘Passion’

‘Passion’ is the first single off the forthcoming AWOLNATION album Here Come The Runts, due out February 2nd. The video, released last week follows a day in the life of Og de Souza, a Brazilian skateboarder who lost the use of his legs as a child due to Polio. Souza cruises through the city and shreds at a beach side skate park all the awhile carrying a heart-warming smile. Lead singer Aaron Bruno  tells Billboard, “Og has a such an amazing passion for life, positivity and, of course, skating, It’s an inspiration to me and what he does is a great example of how to overcome obstacles in life through your passion. I know music has saved my life on more than one occasion. It’s an honor for us that he wanted to be a part of this video and share some of his life together.”

Watch and get inspired!

Bastille drop new single ‘World Gone Mad’

Earlier today Bastille dropped a new single and music video, ‘World Gone Mad’. The song is awesome but the video is even better! Since this single is also the lead single for the Netflix film Bright, it features actors Will smith and Joel Edgerton running the streets in post-apocalyptic Las Angeles. Dan Smith of Bastille emerges from a wrecked cop car and makes his way through the now violent and terrifying “world gone mad”.

Sam talks Next Big Thing with Vance Joy

We are PUMPED to have Vance Joy on the lineup for Day 2 of Next Big Thing this year! I got to speak with him over the phone this week and we talked everything from birthday plans to new music!

Vance Joy’s 30th birthday is Dec. 1st, so he will be flying straight from Australia to Tampa for NBT. When I asked him his usual birthday wishes and traditions he revealed that he actually likes to act as the hostess with the mostest on his birthday! “I like hosting people at my house, I like having everyone in the same space and making sure everyone has a drink, and getting the music going.” He also clued us into the fact that he DOES have a sweet tooth so we will definitely be making some sweetness happen at NBT!

Joy also just dropped ‘Like Gold’ last week, the newest single from his upcoming album Nation of Two, due out in February. We talked the a lot about the writing process on this album and confirmed that we will be hearing new songs from the album at NBT!

Another highlight from the interview was when he described his favorite festival moment. Just imagine, Vance Joy with a broken foot in a boot, lifting his really ‘heavy’ friend on his shoulders in the rain. Yep. Magical.

Hear his newest single ‘Like Gold’ now!

Vance Joy’s single ‘Riptide’ from 2014’s Dream Your Life Away really put him on the map. In May 2015,  it was the 2nd longest charting single in the U>S on the Billboard Hot 100 with a peak in the #30 position.
