Tess Heidelberger, of Mauldin, South Carolina, said she decided to turn her wedding dress into a Christmas tree skirt after finding the dress in her basement earlier this year, The Knot reported.
The dress, which Heidelberger wore on her wedding day in 1990, sat in a box untouched for more than 20 years.
Heidelberger's daughters thought the dress was outdated and didn't want it for their weddings, but Heidelberger felt it was too sentimental to throw away.
"I thought, 'What a waste,'" she told The Huffington Post. "My basic Christmas tree skirt was on the top of the box of Christmas decorations, and that's when I got the idea to put the two of them together."
So she got some scissors and a hot glue gun, and she got to work.
"I laid out my wedding dress and cut the skirt off the dress. The first cut is the hardest," she told the Post. "Then, I cut off any details on the dress, like appliqués, bows and beading. Then I pinned the wedding dress skirt on the plain Christmas tree skirt until I liked the way it looked. Then I just hot glued it in place, and I added the extra appliqués I cut out earlier."
"Now my tree looks like it's floating on a cloud," she wrote on Facebook.
Heidelberger said the project took an hour to complete. She said it was easy to do and liberating.
"You just go crazy because it's just so freeing," she told ABC News. "There's not one stitch in the whole thing. Anyone could do it."
Heidelberger told ABC News she's pleased with the result and her husband is happy to have more storage space in the basement.
"I'm so happy I can look at it every year. It's so pretty," she told ABC. "And it's so much better than staring at your dress through that cellophane window in the box."
