The new research (van der Kolk) unfolding on complex trauma in many ways changes the paradigm and suggests that in addition to a "disease" model, a developmental trauma-attachment based model would lead to a trajectory for recovery that would be much more effective. This workshop will review the emerging data on developmental complex and attachment trauma and its implications to addictions. The implementation of such a model will then be described including issues related to: 1. Goals, 2 assessment, 3. Interventions, 4. Stages of recovery, 5. Pacing, and 6. Outcome. Videotaped segments will be used to illustrate critical components of intervention. Applications to process addictions, such as sexual compulsivity and eating disorder, as well as chemical dependency will be emphasized.Learning Objectives1. The participant will be able to demonstrate a shifting paradigm in addiction treatment with integration with complex trauma data.2. The participant will be able to outline a treatment program for addictions that is trauma/attachment based.3. The participant will be able to determine goals, assessment pacing and outcome of trauma based treatment.About the Featured Presenter: Dr. Schwartz earned his doctorate in Psychology and Mental Health from Johns Hopkins University.
